Lettering: Main Page

Lettering is all about fonts. But its more then that too. Its about text and dialogue and sound effects. We will take a look at all aspects of picking and using lettering effectivly as part of your comic book or graphic novel.

There are a lot of comic book fonts available.

And they are useful for a lot of things. They convey speech and thoughts, and they can convey a mood, when used properly.

Here are some sample fonts and a few of the ways you can modify them. This shows how a font can be adapted quickly to set a mood.

Some of the fonts used were free and some cost a few dollars. For each example the actual name of the font was used.

Remember, interesting fonts can really help contribute to the feeling you are going for.

For MANEATER I applied a red and green gradient to the basic font.

ASHCAN is the basic font with a drop shadow.

CRIMEFIGHTER is another gradient example.

RUTHLESS is just the font with a non-standard color.

10 CENT COMICS has a 1px stroke.

BUCKET O BLOOD is a cool font, that is just colored red, of course!

The next one is POTTY MOUTH. Use it for cursing.

BADBOOM is standard black with a 8px red stroke.

GEISHA BOY is beveled with a drop shadow added.

And AKBAR is a free font that matches the Simpson’s.

In the next section we show you how to quickly mak font modifications to achieve great effects.
